In 1780, the town was planned by Aquilla Scott, who had inherited land in this area. Originally called Scott’s Old Fields, as the town expanded, the name Belle Aire was chosen and in 1798, it was changed to Bel Air by the courts. The Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad served this area in the mid-20th century; however, the tracks were taken down in 1958 and the area is today a walking trail that includes wooded sections of the town around Heavenly Waters Park.
