Havre de Grace is a place of rich history, much of which can still be seen today. One such place is a museum that includes the Lock Keeper's house and remnants of the Susquehanna Canal. Built between 1836 and 1840, the canal provided navigation between Havre de Grace and Wrightsville, PA. Competition from the railroads resulted in a decline in operations after 1885.

Early industry in Havre de Grace consisted mainly of the harvesting of oyster and crabs. From 1912 until the 1950s, Havre de Grace was a stop for those traveling from the south to New York City, and one of its most popular spots was the Havre de Grace Racetrack, which closed in the late 1950s. The 80s were a time of redevelopment, and many historic properties were renovated. New construction, including townhouses, were built on cleared farmland.
Residents of Havre de Grace are served by the Harford County Public School District. Students attend top-rated schools such as Meadowvale Elementary, Harford Technical High School, Havre to Grace High School, and more.
